The royalist forces were commanded by Prince Rupert number around 1000, consisting mainly of cavalry but with some dragoons. They were effectively commanded and appear to have been well trained and committed.

The parliamentarians were under the command of Colonel Nathaniel Fiennes but, as was common in the earlier stages of the war, he was advised by Colonel Brown, an experienced Scottish officer. They also had about 1000 men, comprising some 10 troops of cavalry and 5 of dragoons. Though these were probably well armed and equipped, they seem to have been poorly commanded and trained. Most certainly lacked the experience and commitment required for effective cavalry action.

The royalists lost very few men. On the parliamentarian side there were probably 30 or 40 killed and perhaps as many as 100 wounded.
