Prayerbook Rebellion battlefields added to the Battlefields Hub
7 September 2024
Five new battlefield entries covering the Prayerbook Rebellion have been added to the Battlefields Trust’s Battlefield Hub, expanded the number of battles covered to 95.
The Prayerbook or Western rebellion was one of the uprisings that took place in 1549 against economic and religious changes introduced by king Edward VI’s government. It started at Samford Courtenay in early June and ended at the battle there on 18 August.
The new Prayerbook rebellion entries were submitted by Alex Hodgkins, whose PhD examined Tudor rebellions and who worked on a report on the battlefields for Devon County Council with Dr Glenn Foard in 2009.
Battlefields Trust Research Coordinator Simon Marsh said, ‘the Trust continues to develop the Battlefields Hub to make it the go–to place to find information about British battlefields.’
‘Alex’s contributions are excellent and fill an important but little–known gap in the battlefield history of England.’
The addition of the Prayerbook rebellion battlefields to the Battlefields Hub follows the Trust’s recent joint sponsorship of an information board at Fenny Bridges, one of the rebellion’s battles.
The Trust is also developing an archaeological project to look at surviving battlefield archaeology from the conflict and hopes to start some work at Fenny Bridges this coming winter.
