Work begins to repair Powick old bridge

27 August 2024

Worcestershire County Council has informed the Battlefields Trust that it has commenced work to repair Powick old bridge, which suffered a collapse to one of its wing–walls following heavy rains and a build–up of debris early in the year.

Work to stabilise the bridge had been delayed, in part due to consultations with key stakeholders such as Historic England, Natural England and the Environment Agency.

However, in August a compound for engineering equipment and material was created in the car park off Powick Roundabout and, as of last week, vegetation clearance was underway around the bridge to permit access to the site for heavy plant.

The Council’s contractors have also tested ground strength near the bridge in advance of foundations for the temporary crane mat being installed. The crane, once onsite, will lift bags of ballast into the river to create a dry working area.

Further heavy plant and equipment is due to arrive on site this week.

In a separate development, a Friends of Powick Old Bridge group. has been established (see https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61564539100409)

The group intend to publish updates on the bridge repairs as they proceed and Battlefields Trust members may wish to follow this group to keep up to date on developments.
