Born in 1398, Sir Edmund's family took their name from Great Hampden in Buckinghamshire. He was a lifelong Lancastrian and fought at Towton in 1461. Upon their defeat he fled with Queen Margaret to Scotland and then to France as part of her small household.
He returned with Margaret in April 1471 and remained with her on their recruitment march through Devon and Somerset and on, via the closed city of Gloucester and finally to Tewkesbury.
He was killed during the battle and was buried in the north aisle of the abbey at the foot of the chancel arch.
