Grave of Sir Sir Humphrey Touchet (Audley) of Swaffham, Norfolk. Lancastrian – aged 36 Sir Humphrey was born in1435, second son of Sir James Touchet of Markeaton Derbyshire, 5th Lord Audley of Heighley Castle, Staffordshire. In 1462 Sir Humphrey married Elizabeth Courtenay daughter of Sir Phillip Courtney of Powerham Castle, Devon. (Sir Phillip fought on the Yorkist side at Tewkesbury). Sir Humphrey was made esquire to the body of King Henry VI and Constable of Southampton Castle in 1461. He was often known as Sir Humphrey Audley due to his father’s title. His father having been killed in 1459 at Battle of Blore Heath commanding the Lancastrian army. At Tewkesbury, not only did Sir Humphrey fight against his father in law, Sir Philip Courtenay but also his older half-brother, Sir John, the 6th Lord Audley. Sir Humphrey survived the battle and took sanctuary in the Abbey. He was one of the 17 to be arrested and tried by Richard Duke of Gloucester and Sir John Mowbray - Duke of Norfolk. His brother and father in law could do nothing to save him and he was executed for treason on the 6th May and buried in the chapel of St James.
