The memorial was installed by the St. Albans and Hertfordshire Architectural and Archaeological Society. It is in the wrong place. Its location on the northern side of Victoria Street was based on where the Castle Inn is shown on the woodcut version of the earliest map of St Albans by Benjamin Hare in 1634. Research in 2023 showed that the inn actually stood on the southern side of the road (where Connell's Estate Agents are now located), and where the inn is also shown on the earlier coloured version of Hare's map.
