Memorial Notes:
Sir John was Master of the Grocers Company, an alderman, a sheriff and an MP. In 1471 the Lancastrian "Bastard Fauconberg" attacked London and John (as he was then) led the civilian population's defence against the attack. There was fierce fighting around Aldgate before the Lancastrian attack was repulsed. After 1471 John was knighted by Edward IV for his military service to the Yorkists and appointed to run the very lucrative Calais wool staple. His effigy shows him with military insignia rather than insignia for his civil roles.
