Richard Plantagenet Duke of York fighting for the cause of the white rose fell on this spot in the battle of Wakefield 30 December 1460. This stone was erected in 1897 by some who wish to preserve the memory of the traditional site.

Some discolouration on the stone, but the writing inscribed into the stone is clearly visible.
Memorial Notes:
According to Bramley (Peter Bramley, The Wars of the Roses: A field guide and companion (Stroud: Sutton Publishing, 2007), p.245) the stone plinth replaced a wooden cross erected where Richard Duke of York was killed by Edward IV which was destroyed in the Civil War.
