Battle of Wakefield (1460), information board
Memorial Type:
Information Board
Does the monument still exist?
Yes
Installation Date:
Modern (1899 - present day)
Inscription:
The information board recalls the traditional view of the 'Battle of Wakefield.' This involves Richard, Duke of York being tempted out of Sandal Castle - either by trickery or a shortage of supplies - and defeated in battle on the green between the town and Sandal Castle. New research shows how the earliest records were unanimous that York was captured and murdered by his Lancastrian opponents - there was no 'Battle of Wakefield.' The article by Dawson and Grummitt traces how the story of the battle of Wakefield developed in the decade after the duke's death and was further embellished by Tudor historians (Paul L. Dawson and David Grummitt 'The 'Battle' of Wakefield', Battalia 3 (2025), 1-26).
