Sir William was probably the son of Sir John Lermouth of Bamburgh. He fought on the Lancastrian side during the battle and was killed either during the fighting or in the following rout. He was buried with many others in the Churchyard.

The Tewkesbury Founders Book records the burial of Sir William Lermouth as within the midst of the Abbey Churchyard. The book currently is kept in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford and the entries regarding the burial were made shortly after the battle of Tewkesbury (1471).
