Very little is known about John, except that he performed the role of Clerk to Sir Thomas Tresham. Sir Thomas had been controller of King Henry’s household and also an MP for several counties. As a loyal clerk would have been a vital member of Sir Thomas’s retinue. Both John and Sir Thomas were taken prisoner during the battle of Tewkesbury (1471) and tried before the court held in the town centre following the Lancastrian defeat. Both were found guilty of treason and executed. Sir Thomas was buried in the Chapel of St James and Sir John, in the “Abbey in Diverse Places”.

The Tewkesbury Founders Book records the burial of John Turnbull Esquire as within the nave of the Abbey Church in “Diverse Places” The book currently is kept in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford and the entry regarding the burial was made shortly after the battle
