Sir Walter was the 6th son of Sir Philip Courtenay of Powderham. His family had been torn apart through divided loyalties during the wars.
Sometime during the battle Sir Walter surrendered and was amongst the number that were later tried for treason in the town. Found guilty, he was executed with 16 others. His remains were returned to the Abbey Church for burial.
Sir Walter was not the only Courtenay at Tewkesbury. Two of his brothers, John and Phillip fought on the Yorkist side and were knighted in the field for their valor by King Edward on the following day. Other members of Walter's family also died here, Sir John killed in the fighting and buried in St James Chapel and Sir Hugh also executed following the battle but was returned to his family estate for burial

The Tewkesbury Founders Book records the burial of Sir Walter Courtenay as within the nave of the Abbey Church in “Diverse Places” The book currently is kept in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford and the entry regarding the burial was made shortly after the battle of Tewkesbury (1471).
