John was the son of Sir John Flory also of Cloford, Somerset. Sir John (snr) had been attainted by King Edward in 1464. John (Jnr) had possibly joined Queen Margaret's army as they marched north from Exeter through Somerset on route to Tewkesbury. He acted as Standard Bearer to Sir Edmund Beaufort, 4th Duke of Somerset, Commander in Chief of the Lancastrian forces on the day of the battle of Tewkesbury (1471). Following the rout of the Lancastrians he and Beaufort claimed sanctuary in the Abbey Church, from which he was arrested and tried before the Constable of England (Richard Duke of Gloucester) and Marshall of England (Sir John Mowbray, Duke of Norfolk). He was found guilty of treason and executed in the centre of the town. His body was returned for burial within the Abbey Church.
