Sir John was born in Yorkshire in 1433, he fought for the Lancastrians at the battle of Tewkesbury (1471) being the Sword Bearer to Edward of Lancaster, Prince of Wales. Following the rout he made his way back to the Abbey to claim sanctuary. He was detained and put on trial with the others that were in the Abbey. Found guilty of treason, he was beheaded and his body taken to the Abbey for burial within the Church.

The Tewkesbury Founders Book records the burial of Sir John Gower as within the nave of the Abbey Church in “Diverse Places” The book currently is kept in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford and the entry regarding the burial was made shortly after the battle
