Sir William served Henry VI as Joint Commissioner of Array for Archers from Leicestershire from 1457 to 1460 when he lost his position. He was became Sheriff of Cambridgeshire under the restoration of Henry VI in 1470. He fought on Queen Margaret's side at the battle of Tewkesbury (1471) and was killed on the battlefield. He body was recovered to the Abbey to be buried within the Nave.

The Tewkesbury Founders Book records the burial of Sir William as within the nave of the Abbey Church in “Diverse Places” The book currently is kept in the Ashmolean Museum Oxford and the entry regarding the burial was made shortly after the battle
