Sir John was born in 1418 son Sir John Delvers were an ancient Cheshire family. He served as Sheriff of Staffordshire and as Warden of the Mint. He fought at the battles of Wakefield (1460), second St Albans (1461) and Towton (1461) before managing to escape the aftermath of the latter action. He remained inactive during the intervening years, re-joined the Lancastrian army when Queen Margaret returned in 1470 and fought at the battle of Tewkesbury (1471). He stood alongside his son also John Delvers. Sir John (Senior) was killed during the battle and his son Sir John (Junior) was taken prisoner and later on the 6th May was executed for treason along with 17 others. Both Delvers were buried side by side under the south aisle of the abbey at the foot of the chancel arch.
