Associated places
There are a wide range of locations, sometimes very distant from any battlefield, which nonetheless contain significant monuments related to specific battles or to particular war periods. These include effigies in churches, monuments to famous individuals, buildings touched by major campaign events, right through to museums and exhibitions which contain artefacts from or provide interpretation of the events of the major battles and campaigns. Some of these associated places are identified on the relevant web pages for each battle.
An ideal companion for a visit is a copy of the relevant county volume of Pevsner’s Buildings of England series. They will give more insight into the date and significance of the churches and other buildings that played a role in the action. They are also invaluable when you want to find out more about buildings that one passes on the walk or to plan interesting diversions on the way to or from the battlefield.
Many of these locations are referred to in the various battlefield guides, books or articles consulted in compiling the web pages for specific battles and campaigns. Others have been identified by the systematic searching of the following books, which are useful aids when planning any battlefield visit.
