A number of antiquaries visited the battlefield between the mid 17th and the late 19th century. Only a handful have left us any record of the landscape they saw or the discoveries they made. Examples are the two pencil drawings made by Barrett in 1896 and several letters from Edward Fitzgerald to Thomas Carlyle in the mid 19th century (Terhune & Terhune, 1980). Burne, writing in 1950, reported other local discoveries and traditions that had been mentioned to him and which he had noted in articles written in the 19th century. Both Young (1967) and Warner (2002) also list archaeological discoveries from the battlefield, reported to them by local correspondents.

What is now needed is a systematic survey of all such reports, as they may well add significantly to our understanding of the battle and battlefield.
