During the English Civil War Montagu commanded the Parliamentarian army that laid siege to Lincoln Castle. The Royalists launched mighty stones at the attackers from the castle walls. The four-day siege ended on 6 May 1644 with over 900 Royalists captured or killed. the victorious Parliamentarian soldiers rampaged through the upper city smashing monuments and stained glass in the cathedral.
