In these fields during the Great Civil War the roundhead army under Sir William Waller gained a notable victory over the cavaliers of King Charles I lead by the Earl of Forth and Lord Hopton. This monument commemorates those 20,000 soldiers who hazarded their lives on that spring day. The royalist generals withdrew their army in good order past this place.
