This military lookout played a part in the defence of Chester during the Civil War (1642 - 1646).
At the outbreak of the Civil War defensive earthworks and gun emplacements were built around the Walls. Because of the excellent views, cannon were stationed on the earthworks below this tower.
They were commanded by Captain Morgan, who stood on this platform to direct the firing. Morgan's Mount is named after him. Little is known of Captain Morgan, except that he was killed at the Battle of Winnington Bridge near Northwich, in 1659.
