During the Civil War, the Parliamentarian forces used the site as a base with which to attack the castle. Since then it has been known as "Cromwell's Battery".

The information board is located few metres north of the north-east part of the Rings. The board is near the road, behind a hedge, accessible from a gap 80m NE along the road (but the road is dangerous to walk and no parking place).
