Why is the abbey in ruins ?
In 1539 the abbey was closed by King Henry VIII. In the 1550s the lead roofs and best quality stone were sold off as building materials. In the 1640s during the Civil War, the standing walls were used for a gun emplacement - you can see the holes used for cannon in the long wall to your left. Time and weather continued the damage. In 2017-18 major conservation works were carried out at the ruins to preserve what remains.
