The inscription is from Spensers' The Faerie Queene.

The church was used to hold parliamentarian prisoners during the royalist siege of Gloucester in 1643 and the inscription appears to date from this time and to have been carved by one such prisoner, Richard Foot. In 1644, parliamentarian troops from Gloucester were besieged in the church until forced to surrender by Sir William Vavasour.

During the 1643 royalist siege of Gloucester, Charles I was quartered in Painswick.
