Plaque embedded in the fabric of the building and clear and legible
Memorial Notes:
Royalist prisoners captured during the battle of Great Torrington were held in the church which also housed the royalists powder supply. A probable accidental ignition of powder, perhaps due to a soldier smoking, caused the powder to ignite, destroying the bell tower.
