In 1616 the house was sold to the Walter family whose memorials are in St Peter's church in Wolvercote. In 1645 Royalists led by David Walter fortified the house in an attempt to stop it from falling into Parliamentarian hands. they failed and eventually it was abandoned. In the 1660s Anthony Wood visited the site and sketched the remains.
