These premises stand on the site of the Old Swan Inn one of the oldest licensed premises in the town.It is recorded that in the year 1642 two soldiers of Cromwell's Army were hanged from the wrought iron sign bracket on this wall
This bracket is a good example of Old Hampshire work

The plaque is clearly legible and in good order suggesting it is well maintained.

Memorial Notes:

No record of any hangings in 1642. Tony MacLachlan (The Civil War in Hampshire (Landford: Rowandale Books, 2000, p.207), records the hanging of six Royalist deserters by the order of Sir Ralph Hopton on the wrought iron hook outside of the Old Swan Inn on 13th March 1644. The Rev G. N. Godwin, (The Civil War in Hampshire, London: Elliot Stock, 1892, p.213) records the hanging of one soldier by order of Sir Thomas Fairfax for burglary and murder on 10th March 1645.
