Dating from 1222, the church contains the tomb of Thomas Witherings, Postmaster General to Charles I. Witherings was both an MP and an Alderman. It was claimed that he had assisted the Earl of Norwich in the Royalist insurrection in Essex during 1648, but the charges were dismissed. He died in August 1651.
