Here lie the remains of thirty one persons formerly buried in the crypt beneath the altar of Newark Church and removed thence to this spot in 1883. Among them rest the bodies of Baron Dohna, commander of Queen Henrietta Maria's forces, Sir John Girlington, Sir Gervase Eyre & other loyal officers killed in action during the sieges and gallant defence of Newark 1643 - 46
