Sir Michael Warton's grandfather had been at the York Muster of 1642 and his father, Michael Warton, was killed at the siege of Scarborough Castle in 1645. Wharton himself had been in arms for the King at the battle of Marston Moor (see http://www.whartonfamilyhistory.co.uk/showmedia.php?mediaID=1151&medialinkID=658 and http://www.historyofparliamentonline.org/volume/1660-1690/member/warton-michael-1623-88).

Pair of early portraits of him and his wife, his wife Susanna daughter of John first Lord Poulett, said to be by John Hayls, recently in an auction in the USA They are inscribed: “Michael Warton Esq Son in law of John first Lord Poulett Hales Pint”, and “Susanna daughter of John first Lord Poulett and Wife of Michael Warton Esq of Beverly in Yorkshire Hales Pint”.(see: https://rfjblog.wordpress.com/tag/john-hayls/)

Later(?) portrait of him in armour is in NT Ormesby Hall (http://www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/709300) as he was either the grandfather or father of Mary Warton, who was the wife of the 3rd Baronet, Sir James Pennyman of Ormesby, married in 1692.
