Memorial Notes:

The site was the principle place of execution for prisoners held in the Tower of London. Some 125 people were recorded as having been executed here between 1381 and 1780 (the permanent scaffold was erected during the reign of Edward IV); most notable during the 1640s were Thomas Wentworth, Earl of Strafford (1641) and Archbishop Laud (1645). A stone set in the pavement at the west end of Trinity Square now marks the site.
