Built in 1617, the church of St. John the Baptist was lost to enemy bombing during World War 2. Following his death in Doncaster on 29 October 1648 the body of the Leveller, Thomas Rainsborough was brought home to Wapping, the place of his birth, for burial. His funeral on 14 November 1648 turned into a major Leveller demonstration, with thousands of mourners wearing the Levellers' ribbons of sea-green and bunches of rosemary for remembrance in their hats. Rainsborough’s remains lie somewhere in St John’s Churchyard and on 12 May 2013, a memorial plaque was unveiled by Tony Benn.
