Lane End war memorial

Walk - A Chilterns village in a 1913 battle, and in the two world wars.

Sunday 11th May 2025

In September 1913 the village of Lane End near High Wycombe was captured by two army divisions under Sir Douglas Haig as part of the "Battle of the Chilterns", the last major army exercise before WW1.

During the first world war, Lane End men died as far afield as Iraq. The local newspaper gave a full account of the wartime service and funerals of the men buried in the churchyard.

During the Second World War the village was directly impacted by V weapons as well as the RAF night bombing campaign over Germany.

Simon Cains will discuss these and other wartime events in the local area.  Meet at 10:30am at the Finings Road car park in the village beside the pedestrian crossing, north side of the main road, HP14 3ER.
