Battles in Brentford, 54BCE, 1016 and 1642
Sunday 11th August 2024
The Thames-side settlement of Brentford occupies a strategic position to the west of London and has consequently been the site of several battles over the centuries. This circular walk through a now largely urban landscape explores three engagements from the first Roman crossing of the Thames in 54 BCE, the Saxon defeat of the Danish king Cnut in 1016, and the royalist capture and sacking of the town in the Civil Wars in 1642.
The approximately two-hour walk starts at 2.30 p.m. from the Brentford Market Place/corner of 194 High Street, postcode TW8 8LB. Brentford is accessible by bus, routes 195, 235, 237, 267, E2, E8 or by rail from Brentford Station. Parking is available in the Butts and some side streets.
