Tony Maclachlan (The Civil War in Hampshire, Landford: Rowandale Books, 2000 p.187) records a forlorn hope of 50 confronting royalist pickets at a bridge at Romsey on 12 December 1643 (possibly Broad Bridge).
Rev G N Godwin (The Civil War in Hampshire, Alresford: Lawrence Oxley, 1973 p.140) says that Col Norton attacked Humphrey Bennett at Romsey on 12 December 1643 taking between 25-50 prisoners.
Current Middle Bridge dates from 1931, replacing the C18th bridge which in turn replaced the C13th bridge, as part of the construction of a by-pass for Romsey (A27) running along the south side of the town and bordering the north side of the Broadlands estate.
