Friar's Gate
The Franciscan friars (Greyfriars) gained permission
in 1231 to build a private postern gate to bring in
firewood. Later the gate linked the chapel and burial ground outside the city walls with the precinct inside.
In 1643 the gatehouse was rebuilt and fortified as a
Blockhouse, which came to be the name for the wider
district. The Blockhouse was an important element
of the city's defences during the Civil War.
Friar's Gare was demolished before 1820.
