Engineers from the continent brought across lessons they had learnt about the effectiveness of earthwork defences. The King's chief engineer was Sir Bernard de Gomme, a Dutchman, who helped design Newark's defences. Originally there were two defensive sconces. The Queen's Sconce is where you stand today.
The text goes on to talk about the King's Sconce, on the other side of the town, and the garrison that would have manned the Queen's Sconce. A map shows the location of the other panels on the trail and information is provided on how to download and use the app.
