Memorial Notes:

Although most of today's church (apart from the 15th century tower) dates from the 19th century, the church is famous for being the location of the Putney debates, the Council of War headed by Fairfax, Cromwell and Ireton in November 1647. It is said that the Cromwellian generals sate around the Communion table defiantly wearing their hats. A Cromwell Association plaque within the church commemorates the event. In November 1642, following the Battle of Turnham Green, the Parliamentarians constructed a bridge of boats across the Thames at Putney.
