These fields were the location of two significant battles in 1642 and
1643 between the Royalist troops and Cromwell's Parliamentarians.
The second battle, in 1643 involved more than 8000 who advanced
from Kingsbridge to attack 2000 Royalists defenders who were

The first battle of Modbury in December 1642 involved a parliamentarian attack on the town where the royalists were recruiting forces. the second battle in February 1643 involved a parliamentarian attack on the south-eastern side of the town with a force advanacign from Kingsbridge and probably a separate attack on the western side by a force from Plymouth. Fighting occurred in the fields around Modbury for some hours before the royalists were forced to withdraw into the town. Following overnight bombardment and fighting, the royalists are said to have withdrawn down Runaway Lane.
