Sir Hamo Thornycroft’s bronze statue dates from 1899. Cromwell carries a Bible in one hand and a sword in the other. After strong opposition by Irish MPs, Parliament declined to pay for it, and so, Lord Roseberry, who was the Prime Minster when the statue was first proposed, paid for it himself.
