Said to be the first church to be rebuilt by Wren following the Great Fire, the pre-Fire church was a Puritan stronghold and was under the patronage of Colonel Francis Hacker who commanded the guard at the execution of Charles I. Hacker was executed on 19 October 1660 and buried within the church.
