Battlefields Trust Online Talk: Arms & Armour of the British Civil Wars
Monday 11th November 2024
Having long been a nation at peace and lacking a professional standing army from which to obtain equipment, the opening months of the Civil Wars saw King and Parliament vying for control of the nation's stores of arms. While both sides drew on native arms producers, the scale of the conflict also forced them to look abroad for supplies. Drawing upon surviving pieces, documentary sources and artistic depictions, this talk will examine the production, use and effectiveness of arms and armour during this turbulent period.
Keith Dowen is the Curator of Arms and Armour at the Wallace Collection, London, having formerly been Assistant Curator at the Royal Armouries, Leeds. He completed his BA in archaeology at the University of Nottingham, after which he undertook an MA in Medieval and Renaissance Studies at University College London. Keith has lectured widely, both in the UK and abroad, on a range of subjects encompassing both arms and armour and British military history. His introductory book 'The Arms and Armour of the English Civil Wars' was published by the Royal Armouries in 2019.
