Battle of Maldon 991

Saturday 21st May 2022

The Battle of Maldon in 991 was commemorated in an Anglo-Saxon poem written a few years later, so we probably have more information about it than any other battle from pre-Norman England.  A raiding force of Danes and Norwegians defeated the local Anglo-Saxon forces under the leadership of Byrhtnoth, the Ealdorman of Essex.

We will tour the battle site, cross the tidal causeway to Northey Island, and finish with a visit to the statue of Ealdorman Byrhtnoth on the  promenade at Maldon.  The visit will take 2-3 hours.

Promenade Park toilet blocks include disabled facilities and a Changing Places toilet accessed by Radar key. There are no toilet or catering facilities on Northey Island. You are welcome to bring a picnic onto the island. We will be walking on uneven riverside paths, and access is via a tidal causeway which is uneven and slippery. Sturdy shoes are recommended, and it is unsuitable for wheelchair access.

We will meet at 10:30 near the toilet block in Promenade Park, Park Drive, Maldon CM9 5JQ. Promenade Park Car Park charges are  £6.00 up to 4hrs. Ticket machines currently only accept card payments.

To reserve a place, please email our County Coordinator for Essex, Steve Davey (details below) who will keep in touch with you with last minute arrangements etc.
