Neville's Cross 1346
A western relief road proposed in the local plan which was under consideration for Durham had the potential to damage the battlefield. The proposed relief road ran north of the registered battlefield area, but recent academic work suggested the registered area was incorrect and that the battle took place further north. The Trust wrote to Historic England (HE) highlighting the risk and asked it to consider extending registration. The Trust has also reinforced its request to Durham City Council for a detailed battlefield survey to be undertaken in advance of a decision on the route.
In March 2020, the planning inspector reviewing the proposed Local Plan rejected the need for a western relief road for the city, removing the immediate threat to the battlefield.
