'A World Turn'd Upside Down': The English Civil Wars from a Regional Perspective
Saturday 3rd November 2018
A one-day conference exploring the mid seventeenth-century English Civil Wars from a regional perspective. Lectures from experts in the period will consider the conflict, its context and repercussions in Shropshire, the northerly Welsh Marches and parts of the West Midlands. Speakers include:
- Professor Peter Gaunt on military developments and the civil war in and around Cheshire
- Dr Jonathan Worton on military events and organisation and the civil war in and around Shropshire
- Professor Malcolm Wanklyn on a prominent family of Warwickshire Roman Catholics and their engagement with the civil war
- John Sutton on why Catholics along the Shropshire/Staffordshire border rallied to the royalist cause during the 1651 Battle of Worcester campaign
- Professor Richard Hoyle on how the Poor Law was administered in and around Shrewsbury during a time of civil war and civil strife
- Dr Isabel Jones re-assessing why the so-called Clubmen rose up in arms in parts of Shropshire and the Welsh borderlands in 1644/45
Thus the day will explore key aspects of the military, administrative, religious and social history of the civil war period.
There will also be a display area, including a book stall.
