Battlefields Trust online lecture: The Strongest Fortress in East Anglia - Kings Lynn in the Civil Wars

Thursday 27th January 2022

During the summer of 1643, a Royalist coup seized the Norfolk port of King’s Lynn for the King. Parliament’s reaction was swift, and they recaptured the town after a short siege. Refortified, King’s Lynn became the principle supply base for Parliament’s armies operating in the east and northeast of England. In this lecture, David Flintham tells the story of these traumatic events. He will discuss the development of the town’s defences in the years leading up to the outbreak of the Civil War, the siege itself and its subsequent transformation into The Strongest Fortress in East Anglia. David will conclude his talk with the on-going research: the King’s Lynn under Siege project, including results of the archaeological investigations in September 2021 which are due to be televised early in 2022.

David Flintham is a military historian specialising in 17th century fortress warfare, particularly during the so-called ‘English’ Civil Wars (an interest inspired by the 1970 film Cromwell). He is author of three books (with three more in preparation), and more than 50 other papers, essays and articles. David has been project manager of the King's Lynn under Siege archaeological research project since it's formation in early 2018.

He is also part of a ground-breaking archaeological research project investigating London’s ECW fortifications. A long-time member of the Battlefields Trust, he is also a committee member of the Fortress Study Group. David’s other passions include cricket, malt whisky and the music of Jethro Tull.

This presentation is exclusive to Battlefields Trust members. It starts at 8pm and booking will be on-line in response to a Mailchimp invitation sent to all Trust members.
