Historical Association

We are delighted that an article on conflict in Upper Weardale by our Education Officer, Tony Fox, has been published  in the latest issue of The Historian, the magazine of the Historical Association. There are also articles by our members, Charles Esdaile (on camp followers in the Peninsular war) and Matt Bennett (ongaming the medieval past).

Speaking to us, Tony said'

I joined the Historical Association in 2000, in my first year of teaching, becoming Chair of the Durham Branch five years later. It aims to bring together people who share an interest in and love for the past. Its stated objective is to 'inspire, enable and encourage people to get involved with history, whether in the classroom, at college, in the library or at home. We passionately believe the study of history should be accessible to all people at all levels of study.' It produces three quarterly magazines: The Historian, the main members magazine; Primary History, produced for educators of Primary School age students; Teaching History for Secondary and Sixth Form educators. Each edition of these magazines is focused on a theme, and all three are held in high regard. Teaching History in particular is the envy of other subject associations because it highlights current research, members investigate and report on the state of history education, and many officers talk to government and policymakers, giving historians an authoritative voice. Many Battlefields Trust members will know Professor Anne Curry; she was President of the Historical Association from 2006  to 2009.'
