Newbury II Added to the Battlefields Trust Resource Centre

The Second Battle of Newbury, fought on 27 October 1644, saw royalist forces under King Charles I hold off attacks north of Newbury from the combined parliamentarian armies under the Earls of Essex and Manchester and Sir William Waller.  The battle closed Parliament's 1644 campaign against the King and resulted in widespread reciminations amongst the parliamentarian leadership, particularly between the Earl of Manchester and his Lieutenant General of Horse, Oliver Cromwell.  The implementation of Self Denying Ordinance and formation of the New Model Army in 1645 can be directly attributed to the outcome of the battle.
