Battle of Bridport 1685

Sunday 16th July 2017

In 1685 the Duke of Monmouth invaded England at Lyme Regis to begin his attempt to unseat his uncle James II.  One of the first actions of the rebellion was a battle in the streets of Bridport which was fought on 14 June. A close-run thing, it involved several hundred rebels and about an equal number of men of the Dorset Militia, and left the high street littered with dead and dying men.

Join Dr Christopher Scott for a walking tour of the sites associated with this little-known but dramatic episode in Bridport's history. The walk will depart at 2:30pm from West Street Car Park. It will last about two hours and involve about two miles of walking. Attendance is free for Battlefields Trust members. A donation of five pounds is requested from non-members.

The urban nature of this walk means that numbers have to be limited so advance booking is essential.  To reserve a place please visit
