750th Anniversary of The Battle of Evesham 1265
August 2015
The Simon de Montfort Society are commemorating the 750th anniversary of the death of Simon de Montfort at the Battle of Evesham and the creation of the first English Parliament.
Saturday 1 August 2015: 'Commemoration & Democracy Day' when the Speaker and other parliamentary officials will lay wreaths in Abbey Park.
Tuesday 4 August (evening), 2015: Keynote lecture by Professor David Carpenter (a Patron of the Simon de Montfort Society).
Saturday & Sunday 8 & 9 August 2015: Medieval Festival weekend on Crown & Corporation Meadows. To include: a re-enactment of the battle of Evesham 1265, craft fair & demonstrations; 'living history'; music; much food & drink. A wargaming event organised by Daniel Faulconbridge (editor of 'Wargames Illustrated') will also be held over this weekend and the tapestry featured at the Battle of Lewes commemoration in May 2014 will be on display in Evesham.
Monday 10 August 2015: (Supported by the Mortimer History Society). Buffet supper at the Evesham Hotel followed by a talk by Katherine Ashe the American author of the 4-volume 'novelized history of Simon', provisionally entitled 'Why Simon truly was the founder of Parliament'.
Wednesday 12 August 2015: Historical walkabout around the town & the battlefield.
Friday 14 August 2015: Supper at Abbey Manor & talk (provisionally about Simon & the Abbey) by Dr. David Cox (also a Patron of the Simon de Montfort Society). Courtesy of Mr & Mrs John Phipps.
